Compare the whole offer—not just the headline
A low introductory rate can be valuable, but it’s only one piece of the offer. Compare these five things before you choose a card:
The interest rate you’ll pay if you carry a balance.
What you’ll pay each year just to have the card.
The promotional interest rate, how long it lasts, and what the APR becomes when it ends.
What you’ll pay to move a balance from another card—usually a percentage of the amount transferred.
What you earn—cash back, points or miles—and what you have to spend to earn them.
The best offer depends on how you’ll actually use the card. A great rewards card may not be a great deal if you carry a balance and pay high interest.
Compare by card type
Different card types are designed for different goals. Start with the type that matches how you expect to use the card.

Travel Rewards Cards
These cards can be useful for people who travel frequently and can take advantage of points, miles or travel benefits. Look at the rewards structure, annual fee and any restrictions before deciding whether the benefits justify the cost,
Balance Transfer Cards
These cards can help when you want to move existing debt to a lower introductory rate. Compare the balance transfer fee, promotional period and APR after the promotion ends.
No Annual Fee Cards
These cards avoid an annual fee, but “no annual fee” does not automatically mean no cost. Check the APR, fees and rewards to understand the full offer,
Before you apply
Before applying, check the card’s current terms—not just the promotional offer. Make sure you understand the ongoing APR, fees, credit limit, rewards requirements and what happens when an introductory period ends.
